Let's get down to business

Dear you, reading this,

I'm paying for this you know. It's the museum of me! how cool is that? Is it cool? It's causing global warming! is that cool? All these young adults are in this cafe with me and there's so much less idle chit chat than 6 years ago. The Teen and early 20 somethings smoking and laughing on the porch have been replaced by statues glued to apples and androids, Tablets and laptops. All these machines are whirring away while the only conversation I can distinguish pipes up and dies down. Earlier someone was moaning.

The moaning was inexplicable for a while. When something like that happens, it's easy to think that you're the only one who hears it. Then you might start thinking that the room has collectively decided to ignore it. As you start to look around the room you may notice that others have noticed the moaning and are just as confused as you. You might try and rationalize it in your head. "Clearly the man needs to do this in order to operate better. The mild disturbance of the space is nothing compared to the relief he's getting from this" you think to yourself, afraid to make eye contact with anyone. If you do you'll both know that the moaning is real and you might have to combine efforts. This would make the offending party feel singled out and if that makes them uncomfortable it may lead to more moaning. The moaning continues. You might start to wonder if he's getting some sick thrill out of the moan. You've made eye contact with some one. You're talking about where its coming from. You've singled out the source. You may feel awkward. You may think you're positive the moaner feels awkward.

I never would've noticed the moaning man 6 years ago. I would've been wrapped up in a conversation with my friends. I would be struck by the way the 18 year old kids had shooters to pour in their coffee. I would've felt alive. I suppose I still feel alive. I'm expressing my self creatively while others study and work! What more noble pursuits could there be? We talked about it six years ago and here is the dream realized. We're getting down to business. We've traded talk for moans and whirls and I honestly can't say I blame us.

Something magic is happening here. The room has cleared and now we're talking. Perhaps this is the new interaction. We're back to body language. We study each other. We talk. All is good. The works gets done and the conversation flows. I guess I'm just not used to working.

As always, thank you for reading,
